Be sure to stop by the Boat Shed Cafe and try a sticky bun and enjoy the views over the lake to the spectaclar Remarkables Mountains.
If you feel like a couple of hours in the fresh Queenstown air then this trail is for you! It’s a relatively flat and easy ride or long-ish walk with wide trails designed for walkers and riders to share. It’s ideal for families with young children or those of us who are relative strangers to cycling!
Begin at the Queenstown Gardens entrance and follow the signposts all the way along the lakefront. Stop for coffee at the Boatshed, Frankton Marina then follow the signs to the historic one-lane Kawarau Falls bridge. This is where Lake Wakatipu flows into the mighty Kawarau River. A great photo spot.
If more coffee calls or you feel the urge for a spa or massage, brunch or beer, stop off at The Hilton Hotel for a luxurious experience. If the mood takes you, make an afternoon of it and ask the Hilton to arrange return transport for you and your bikes. Or you can carry on past The Hilton along the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
Here you’ll get an up-close view of some of Queenstown’s most notable contemporary homes. Take your time to soak up the lakefront views and incredible photo opportunities along the way. The easy trail takes you to the Wakatipu Yacht Club – continue past the yacht club and explore the recently upgraded Kelvin Peninsula Loop.
The Loop will lead you through forests and give you a birds eye view of Queenstown Bay, Walter Peak and the Frankton Arm. Keep your eyes peeled, as this Loop is fast becoming known as the 'Sculpture Trail'. There are three stunning Sculptures positioned around the Peninsula - take your time (and photo's) to enjoy these stunning works of art - they include Kelvin Peninsula Goats, three distinctive goats by Auckland artist Jeff Thomson best known for his work in corrugated iron, and a schist and steel static kinetic sculpture by Arrowtown artist Shane Woolridge located on the Kelvin Peninsula headland. The Shane Woolridge sculpture, named Thru Link to Peak, is constructed of 25 tonnes of schist and perfectly frames Walter Peak on the far side of the lake. and the most recent addition is an imposing corten and stainless steel sculpture created by local artist Mark Hill is the most recent addition set alongside Lake Wakatipu at Kelvin Grove. Known as Presence, Marks says his work depicts a tree spirit. “The location is perfect and the colours of Presence blend with the surrounding trees. In fact the sculpture blends so well it catches you by surprise when you first see it.”
The Queenstown Golf Course has a great café and is only a short ride or walk from the Trail and is well sign-posted (plus you can't miss it - it's the building in the middle of the world's most scenic Golf Course!). Be sure to stop in at the Golf Course for a coffee, they also have air available by the pro-shop for your tires.
Return the same way, carry on around the Loop and back onto the Kelvin Peninsula Trail or arrange transport for you and your bikes, back to Queenstown.
