Not now Go to surveyViews from the four bridges criss-crossing the Arrow River, riding the Barfoot Tunnel under the State Highway, the 80m Edgar suspension bridge
A relatively easy ride which zigzags across five bridges over the Arrow River through quaint country lanes, burrows under a major State Highway to the AJ Hackett’s Bungy, then delivers you to the home of magnificent Central Otago wines – Gibbston Valley! Great for families with kids, beginners and wine enthusiasts.
Start your day with a fortifying breakfast or brunch at one of the many cafes in Historic Arrowtown – or stock up on picnic provisions and hit the trail! Your ride starts at the Arrowtown River carpark on the ‘true right’ of the lovely willow-lined Arrow river (home of the goldrush in the 1800s).
Crossing five bridges, you’ll zig-zag the chortling Arrow, a river of many moods, sometimes tranquil, often rushing over rocks and bluffs, then widening to limpid pools. There’s no shortage of photo ops and picnic spots along the river’s edge, so take your time and enjoy the journey.
A great picnic spot sits beside the Swain Family Bridge, there is a lovely space to put down your bikes, lay out a rug and break out a picnic on the riverside - it is quite simply magical!
One of the most popular photo stops is midway across the awe-inspiring Southern Discoveries suspension bridge. A destination in itself and what a view!
Across the bridge, you’ll ride past quaint cottages and grazing horses down Whitechapel country lane – a landscape painting straight out of a picture book! Stop at the Knights Family Underbridge and take in spectacular downstream view of where the Arrow River drops into the gorge.
Yet another impressive feat of engineering, the breathtakingly graceful 80-metre Edgar Suspension Bridge looms dramatically. From its midpoint, it is guaranteed to deliver gasps of appreciation at the view down the Arrow Gorge.
Be sure to stop at the Wall of Recognition and offer up a 'thanks' to the landowners and Queenstown community who had the vision to help make the Queenstown Trail a reality.
Getting across busy State Highway 6 is a piece of cake via the Barfoot Tunnel - and onto a part of the trail which follows the original goldminers’ road into Queenstown. Breathe in the thyme-scented mountain air as you make your way over the historic Kawarau Bridge (yes, you’ll cross the very bridge those brave souls throw themselves off). Also home of A J Hackett’s Bungy site, the world’s first bungy operation.
The AJ Hackett Centre is a stunning piece of architecture, well worth a visit - a fabulous café, toilets and of course tickets for that bungy jump you've been promising yourself.
We recommend intermediate cyclists follow the signs across the highway and cycle up the spectacular Chard Farm Road to sample some of the finest wines in Gibbston. The views are sensational.
What will it be? A ride back to Arrowtown... a ride from Gibbston to Queenstown or a spot of wine tasting and lunch, followed by a transport pick-up The choice is yours.
If you need air in your tires dual valve pump heads have been installed at Butlers Green, Arrowtown (and the Old Shotover Bridge if you are out that way).
