The inaugural 2016 7 Day EPIC Mountain Bike Stage Race through NZ’s Southern Alps proved to be a true pioneering race. All those who competed loved the stunning scenery, the brutal nature of the challenge, and left them heaping praise on this epic event through New Zealand’s pristine high country. Many riders pushed themselves to their absolute limits, and then rode beyond to discover new limits for themselves and their teammate. The level of camaraderie that developed amongst the riders around the social lounge in camp every day was staggering and heart-warming. We don’t exaggerate when we say life-long friends are made on this journey. Find your riding partner today and become a Pioneer.
The Queenstown Trails Trust is delighted to be Charity Partner for the Queenstown-leg of the race, which sees the competitors commence at Snow Farm in Wanaka riding 59kms down a quick descent and making their way along the recently upgraded Gibbston River Trail all the way into Queenstown (there are a few ups and downs and some water to tackle in between Snow Farm and the trail!). Funds raised from The Pioneer go directly back into trail network maintenance within the Wakatipu Basin and we would like to thank The Pioneer event organisers Ironman and all of the competitors for their support of the trail network - you rock!

The event harbours great history and if the 2016 Motatapu event is anything to go by 2017 will be equally awesome! The inaugural Motatapu was held in 2005, offering a mountain bike or marathon option and attracted 1,000 participants. Now over 4,500 people take part in five different events, all held on the same day in a very beautiful part of the world which is only open to the public one day a year specifically for the Motatapu event.
Event options include:
Motatapu Ultra Run (formerly Adventure Run)
The Motatapu event is owned by the Queenstown Trails Trust and delivered by the fine team at Lagardere Unlimited Oceania, with proceeds from the event helping to fund the on-going maintenance and development of trails in the Wakatipu to ensure the high standard of the Queenstown Trail is maintained.
